Phocion Essays

The "Phocion" essays of 1796 were a series of 25 venomous political letters published in the Gazette of the United States during the fiercely contested presidential election between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Functioning as the late 18th-century equivalent of a modern political "attack ad," they aimed to systematically dismantle Jefferson’s character and fitness for office.
